This year I was chosen along with 85 other blogs to participate in the Back to School Backpack Pay It Forward charity event!! I was so excited when I got chosen because I heard hundreds of bloggers apply and not everyone gets picked.
I was given $25 by our sponsor Campus Book Rentals (who I have used to rent textbooks) to buy a backpack and as many school supplies as I could to donate to a family, student, or organization of my choice. At work we had a box set up for the Tools 4 Schools program for our local school district so after purchasing my items I placed them in the box at work. I love that my job has a charity committee and finds ways to give back to the community.
I shopped in 3 different stores to get a wide assortment of items to donate. I also estimated how much the products normally are (off season) and calculated my total savings.
2 Backpacks – $10.99 BOGO
Total Savings: $10.99
4 Composition Notebooks – $0.50
Total Savings: $8
*I originally went to Office Max for more items but they were sold out of all the sale items I was going to purchase except the notebooks*
2 Packages of Kleenex – $0.78
2 Sharpeners – $1.38
2 Packages of Pencils – $1.14
5 Packages of Crayola Markers – $5
7 Boxes of Crayola Crayons – $3.50
1 Crayola Colored Pencils – $0.99
2 Rulers – $0.50
2 Gluesticks – $0.27
2 Liquid Glues – $0.70
2 Scissors – $1.42
4 Filler Paper – $1.42
6 Folders – $0.78
I saved $2 with a Crayola coupon for spending $10 on Crayola products and I saved 50 Cents with the Cartwheel app on the Folders, Scissors and Glue. I saved 10% on each item.
Target Total: $15.55
Total Savings: $60
Overall I spent a total of $28.54 on everything I purchased and saved a total of $78.99. After the $25 I was given I only had to spend $3.54 out of pocket. It felt great to give back to the community and it was a lot of fun trying to get the most school supplies for my money.
