I have finished this book at a perfect time. Earlier this week my FIRST GUEST POST was featured on Katie @ NFPandme’s Blog about my perspective of NFP as a Single Person. Which goes in hand about what this book review is about!
When I was accepted to The Catholic Company’s book review program I was really excited to be reviewing CATHOLIC BOOKS!! I went through the list of books and How to Find Your Soulmate Without Losing Your Soul by Jason & Crystalina Evert really caught my eye. I thought it would be a great read as I heard Jason Evert speak at a Pure Reality conference 2 years ago and he was a great speaker.
The title of this book really caught my eye. There have been many times in my life where I have felt like I was “losing my soul” by staying single and getting accused of being “too picky” for far too long. The beginning of this book does a great job in going through the kind of men you should “avoid” from the Control Freak to the Tearful Cheater. I could relate to many of these “men” from reality TV shows and movies. I can remember watching these movies and laughing at how awful these girls were treated but never imaged it happened “in-real-life” but alas it does especially when these young men and women have such awful role models from the not-so-reality TV shows.
After we understand who all the “bad guys” are the book goes into different areas that women need to focus in order to find a good guy. The book also does a GREAT job in brining the churches teachings into “reality.” My whole teen life I was taught to keep sex for marriage and to practice chastity. But I don’t remember learning much more than that. No one could really teach me WHY we need to do all this. Side Note: this was in the pre Theology of the Body era.*
But this book does an excellent job in going into details of why we need to make sure we save ourselves of our future spouse and different things we can do in order to make sure that happens like growing a back bone and focus on finding our bridesmaids and not our husband.
While researching more about the book I saw Jason and Crystalina Evert on Life On the Rock on EWTN, you can watch it here. One of the things Crystalina said I will NEVER forget is, “to find a man who takes his faith seriously because then he will take YOU seriously.” That really struck me as a great thing to look for in your future soul mate and I feel that is what they were aiming for when they wrote this book. They wanted a resource that answered teen’s questions about dating, relationships, and the Catholic Church.
I would caution you if you have gone to a lot of chastity/purity/theology of the body events this book might not be for you. I found a lot of the information useful BUT at the same time repetitive as most of the information I had heard somewhere else at one time or another.
This review was written as part of the Catholic book reviewer program from The Catholic Company. Visit The Catholic Company to find more information on How to Find Your Soulmate Without Losing Your Soul. They are also a great source for a Catechism of the Catholic Church or a Catholic Bible.
Love love LOVE this book! And the Everts! They’re awesome. P.S. Loved your NFP as a single post.
