I just finished reading the book First Date by Krista McGee. When I received an email from Booksneeze about this upcoming book tour in December I knew I had to get this book! I’m a sucker for a young adult fiction love story. I guess you could say it’s one of my MANY guilty pleasures.
This book is about an ordinary geeky god loving high school student, Addy, who is chosen to represent her school in a reality show for a Date with the President’s son. The reality show called The Book of Love, is a lot like a teen version of The Bachelor. The girls compete in all different kinds of competitions from talent to intellectual. Addy begins the show with a very negative attitude hoping to get kicked off right away but week by week Addy changes her mind about leaving the show (especially as she gets to know the Presidents son better). Addy soon realizes that her roommate, Kara, is the only other contestant she can trust and rely on. She realizes that many of the girls are there to “get famous” and don’t even care about going to the prom. I don’t want to spoil too much of this book but it was greatly written and I can’t wait for Krista’s second book about Kara this summer.
I loved the way Addy grew in her relationship with God throughout the book. One of the reasons Addy gave in to go on the show was because she felt God chose her to do good on a show that could be full of sin. She never talked down or bad to all the other girls that were mean to her. She was even able to help one of the producers and the president’s son read the bible and learn more about God. I have not read too much Christian Fiction but this book did it very well. When I first got this book I started by only reading one chapter a day. Half way through the book I couldn’t put it down and was reading 5 chapters a day!
Logistically I loved that each chapter was very short. I HATE having to stop reading a book in the middle of a chapter and some nights I didn’t feel like reading 20 pages in one sitting. The fact that each chapter was only 2-6 pages made reading this book much easier and a much faster read.
If you love reality tv, young adult fiction, and teen christian you will LOVE this book! It’s so different to read about a reality show than watch it! I think anyone can enjoy this book and hope you will go and read this book right away!!
