Oh Valentine’s Day…….I can remember in high school HATING IT. Different clubs would sell different candy, flowers, compatibility tests(wish I was kidding), and telegrams. And in all honesty probably about 5% of the student body took part because in high school kids don’t really have money.
I can remember loving and hating it on and off basically all through college and then working life. Now I could really care less…the only thing I hate is all the flower deliveries that used to show up at my first post-college office job. Thankfully this year the husbands were too cheap to pay for delivery fees and just gave their wives their gifts at home.
But here is my beef with Valentine’s Day….why do we need a day to tell someone we love them?!!? Why can’t we love people everyday and give them gifts everyday…just because we want to. I think part of this comes from how frugal I am. Everyone increases the prices of flowers and candy by 1000% on Valentine’s day and Mother’s Day because of how society makes you feel about the holiday. Any other time of the year the prices on these things are really reasonable.
It’s interesting Valentine’s Day isn’t really a big deal in other countries. I was talking to someone last week who said it’s just a regular day. Just goes to show you how the United States tries to make others feel bad and make money off anything they can.
But really the story of St. Valentine is really sweet…minus the fact that he was a martyr. He married couples in secret.
And then as my honorary Single-ton meme I of course went to Walgreens and delightfully bought a bunch of their 50% off Valentine’s Day Candy.
So however you feel about Valentine’s day just don’t sit around and sulk in your singleness because it’s really not worth it. Buy yourself something nice, do something fun for yourself, buy a widow some chocolate or flowers, or send some valentine’s to your single friends.
Beth Anne,
Reading about the high school compatibility test totally brought back some memories because my high school did that too! And it didn’t just tell us which guys we were ‘compatible’ with, but it also mentioned which girls we should be friends with…so bizarre!

My school never did any of that, super glad about that. The dating couples would walk around holding hands and the girls would usually have a rose or a bear. I have endured the gifts delivered to the office, I had one boss who bought all us ladies a rose, that was nice.

Indeed… we should tell everyone how much we love them on a daily basis… but, I do like the little extra encouragement that the day provides! haha 🙂

I’m married, and we have never done anything ‘Valentiny’ for Valentine’s Day. It’s just another day. We cherish each other on a daily basis, and surprise each other at odd times of the year without regard to birth dates, anniversaries or Hallmark-induced days ;).
